IDC Open Water Presentations with IDC dive resort Oceans 5 Gili Islands Indonesia

During the PADI IDC, instructor development course, the candidates learn how to put a classroom, confined open water and open water presentation together. In the last few days the candidates, Manon, Rose, Toni and Ian, have done a few classroom presentations and a few confined water presentations.

Today it is the time for their first Open Water Presentation. During the Open water presentation the candidates have to brief 2 skills. The candidates will have different roles underwater. Sometimes the play Instructor, Divemaster or student. Doing it this way the candidates learn to control students as an instructor, learn to have a broader view, and think about the environment.

The training site of Oceans 5 dive resort is only 5 mijn away by boat. Today PADI Course Director Camille Lemmens, Master Instructor Allen and IDC Staff Instructor Riet will score the candidates. There will be also descent and CESA workshops. And at the end of the water work the candidates will practice Rescue Exercise 7.

It will be a fun day!

IDC Gili Islands Indonesia with Dive Resort Oceans 5 Gili Islands

IDC Gili Islands Indonesia with Dive Resort Oceans 5 Gili Islands

The first day was all about dive theory exams. There are 5 topics:

1) Equipment
2) Skills and Environment
3) RDP
4) Physics
5) physiology

The passing rate is for each topic 75%. Except for the person who is doing the IDC staff; her passing rate should be 80% or higher.
Oceans 5 dive resort starts her IDC always with an evaluation of the Dive Theory Exams. The PADI Course Directors like to see how the knowledge of the IDC candidates is and they will have enough time to brush the knowledge that is leaking. Especially when the candidates did their PADI Divemaster Course a few years ago they forget most of the theory.

Today it will be a full day of pool. The candidates are having a skills circuit, a rescue workshop, and practicing their rescue skills. Hopefully it stays a big cloudy for them. Sun burnings are happening a lot during rescue skills.

Certificate of Recognition for Excellence

Certificate of Recognition for Excellence

The year is just started and one of PADI Course Directors had received a Certificate of Recognition for Excellence. Gina wrote to PADI about her experiences with PADI Course Director Camille Lemmens and Dive Resort Oceans 5 Gili Islands during the October 2013 Instructor Development Course Indonesia.

Gina did her PADI Divemaster Course at Gili Trawangan, but decided to come to Gili Air to follow her dream to become a PADI Dive Instructor. She enjoyed the island so much that she stayed 6 months on Gili Air. During these months she got a lot of experience as a divemaster and as an instructor. She found work on the island, and is now a dive instructor on a tropical paradise island.

At the moment Oceans 5 dive resort has started another PADI IDC and PADI IDC Staff Instructor Course. This time there is 1 IDC staff instructor candidate and 4 IDC candidates. The PADI Course Directors are conducting the IDCs in English, Dutch, French and German.

The new IDC class room will be finished in a few weeks. It will be a modern class room with all the newest technologies. It will have space for 10-15 candidates easily. The next goal will be another pool, especially made for IDCs. The current pool is a 25 meter especially designed for scuba diving, but Oceans 5 like to offer quality to their candidates. So the new pool will have no other distractions. It will be a 20 meter pool with 2 levels of depth.

If you want to do your IDC on the Gili Islands you cant deny that Oceans 5 has the best IDC facilities. And Oceans 5 dive resort likes to keep this, so every time Oceans 5 is listening to the candidates how Oceans 5 can improve.

PADI IDC Indonesia Day 2

The first day of the PADI IDC Indonesia was the orientation day. Oceans 5 dive resort has only one candidate but it is a bit more challenging this is an Indonesian one, her name is Miyah. But Oceans 5 dive resort is lucky, at this moment we have 9 divemaster trainees that can help PADI Course Director Sander Buis out and smell a bit of an IDC.

Some of the Divemaster Trainees went the first day in the pool with Miyah for a skill circuit and experienced that a PADI Course Director gives higher scores for their skills than the “normal” instructors. Sander explained first all the skills on a whiteboard, and told them there is not only one way to perform a skill. He loves to see that even the divemaster trainees become more flexible and adjust themselves to what kind of students they have.

The second day started with classroom presentations of Sander. And in the beginning of the afternoon another skill circuit with some rescue practicing, exercise number 7. This is one of the most important skill during the dive education, you will practice it during your rescue course, divemaster course, instructor development course and finally during the instructor examination.

In the late afternoon Sander started teaching physics to the IDC candidate and some local divemaster trainees.

At 17.30 the day was over…. There was a night dive and Miyah went home to prepare her classroom presentation.

What to do after your PADI IDC?

Everyone have a dream, one wants to become a pilot, another one a doctor, but you never heard that little kids are saying i like to become a dive instructor. Till people start travelling around the world and visit the most beautiful places on the world. Maybe one of these places is a little island with crystal clear water and a dive shop. They become curious and do their first dive and before they know it thy are addicted to diving, the life style, the underwater water nature, and more… Like the Gili Islands, beautiful Islands with no cars, no motorbikes, and you don’t have to wear shoes….

Gili Islands perfect place for your IDC, PADI Instructor Course

Gili Islands perfect place for your IDC, PADI Instructor Course

Before they know it they become divemaster, but as a divemaster you don’t earn that amount of money for a real life. So they have a few option back home, back for study or maybe to become a dive instructor.

The PADI instructor course or IDC or PADI Instructor Development Course takes at Oceans 5 dive resort 10 days. After the IDC there will be a 3 days PADI Instructor Examination. Someone from PADI comes to us to check if you know what PADI Course Director Camille Lemmens and PADI Course Director Sander Buis taught you in the last 10 days. There will be nothing new, everything should be clear from the beginning.

If you passed your IE and you are EFR instructor you will be within 10 day an in active status PADI Instructor. Ready to teach Open Water Diver Courses, Advanced Open Water Courses, Rescue Diver Course, Divemaster Courses and 3 specialty courses, Project Aware, Corral reef conservation and Peak Performance Buoyancy.

But in these 10 days you are not allowed to teach, so what to do?

Oceans 5 dive resort offers Master Scuba Diver Trainer preparation courses. You can get 5 instructor specialties rating for ONLY Euro 200 extra. And it doesn’t matter which ones you choose, only for sidemount instructor there are extra additional costs. You have more teaching opportunities and you become more valuable for the dive shop for you are starting working.

If you like to start working as a dive instructor in Indonesia be aware that a dive instructor should have a working permit (KITAS). KITAS is a long staying permit but most people call KITAS a working permit but that is not totally true. A KITAS is related to the company you are working for, and has a job description. It is impossible to start working for more companies, or doing suddenly different things than your job description describes.

Another option is starting to assist courses with experienced instructor after your PADI IDC. You learn how to conduct a course, organizing, and to work with real students. Oceans 5 dive resort offers this to all IDC candidates. Everyone is welcome to staff after their IDC/IE.
